Wan Hai Lines began in 1965 primarily as a log transportation company operating in Taiwan, Japan, and Southeast Asia. In 1976, in response to the rapid development of international trade in the Asia Pacific and other international trends, Wan Hai transformed itself into a full-container vessel shipping company.

Wan Hai’s shipping routes include Taiwan, Kanton and Kansai areas of Japan, Korea, Mainland China, Hong Kong, Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, Burma, Cambodia, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and the Middle East. Wan Hai provides full-container vessel shipping with regular routes in these areas. Its network includes subsidiaries and agents in all of Asia’s major cities and ports.

In 2004, Wan Hai had 66 full-container vessels in operation with a capacity of over 90,000 TEU. In addition to the exclusive terminal in West 17 of Keelung, Wan Hai also leased No. 34, No. 35, No. 63, and No. 64 in Taichung and Kaohsiung, which makes Wan Hai the only carrier in Taiwan with exclusive terminals in the northern, central and southern regions of the island. Currently, 15 of its 20 routes in operation provide direct calling to 43 major international commercial ports, giving Wan Hai the most comprehensive and intensive service network available in Asia. Since then, it has become one of the largest players in the container shipping industry, with a fleet of 72 vessels and a capacity of roughly 180,000. Almost 87 per cent of Wan Hai’s services are focused on routes in Asia.
